Join us for an inspiring opportunity to connect with fellow Korean adoptees in the Bay Area! We're hosting a private K-Pop Dance Class at City Dance Studios! All dance experience levels welcome.
K-pop dance has a long history that began in the 1980s and continues to evolve today. It's a social dance that blends traditional Korean dance with Western styles like hip-hop choreographed to Korean pop music.
This is a chance to meet new people, enjoy learning some K-POP dance moves together, and share experiences in a supportive and welcoming environment. Whether you're looking to make new friends or simply try something new, this event is designed to be an inclusive and fun space for the Korean adoptee community.

Chopstick-Making Class
Join us for a unique hands-on workshop crafting your very own, customized set of chopsticks from start to finish!
WHEN: Saturday, April 26, 2025 from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
WHERE: Redwood City (address will be provided upon registration)
The event, which has space for 8 -10 guests, is a fun way to explore Korean culture, learn more about chopstick making and interact with your fellow KADs in an intimate home setting (Redwood City). KAD Adults are welcome!
How do I register?
1. Please send Emily Seo (IG: @ejsseo or email: emilyseo12@gmail.com) a message that you want to register.
2. Send AKASF $35 to their PayPal - be sure to include your name and what the payment is for.
3. Once payment is received, you will receive a confirmation message that you have been registered for the class and exact address in Redwood City.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Once you have paid, the attendance fee is non-refundable. BUT if someone else would like to take your place, please let Emily know and you will coordinate with the new attendee for payment. IF we do not have enough attendees (8) registered by April 17, we will need to cancel the event; you will receive a refund.
We will provide Korean snacks for the group. But if you would like to bring something to share, please feel free to! A special thanks to Emily Seo for coordinating this event and making it possible! 🫰🏼

Golden State Warriors | Asian Heritage Night

It's basketball season and AKASF is excited to take part in this year's Asian Heritage Night as hosted by the Golden State Warriors at the Chase Center! Conversations about AKASF's attendance and participation started last year with the Warriors staff, and our Board is pleased to announce that we have secured 42 discounted tickets to the game.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the limited number of tickets, priority will be given to adoptees first. If all the tickets have not been claimed by 2/28 we will open the tickets up to friends and family of adoptees. Our guest list will be limited to 42 people and we expect these tickets to go quickly so be sure you register via the form and pay your $55 fee to secure your spot. Your ticket is NOT guaranteed until you have paid the fee. The $55 fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable.

Climbing Social
Join us for an exciting and unique opportunity to connect with fellow Korean adoptees in the Bay Area! We're hosting a social bouldering event at Pacific Pipes Rock Gym, the largest climbing gym in North America, where you can climb, mingle, and build community with others who share similar experiences.
This event is open to all experience levels, whether you're a seasoned climber or have never tried bouldering before—our focus is on having fun and making connections. No prior climbing experience required. The gym provides all the necessary equipment, including climbing shoes and chalk. You'll have access to a range of climbing walls suited for beginners and more advanced climbers, with AKASF volunteers available to assist beginners.
This is a chance to meet new people, enjoy climbing together, and share experiences in a supportive and welcoming environment. Whether you're looking to make new friends or simply try something new, this event is designed to be an inclusive and fun space for the Korean adoptee community.

Date & Time: Saturday, February 15, 2025 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.
Deadline to Register: February 1st (adoptees)
Location: Pacific Pipe Rock Gym, 2140 Mandela Pkwy, Oakland, CA 94607
Who: Priority will be given to adoptees (if we have remaining spots, we will open those up to friends and family and the registration will be extended to February 8th)
Cost: $10 fee for entry and shoe rental
What to Bring: Comfortable athletic clothing. If you have climbing shoes, feel free to bring them, but the gym will provide rentals.

Kimchi Workshop
ABOUT THE EVENT
Join AKASF and Chef Judy for a Kimjang Kimchi making workshop! Chef Judy will share her family's Kimchi recipe that has been passed down for generations in the spirit of Kimjang. In this class we will start by enjoying an appetizer and then we will prep, ferment, and store kimchi that you will get to take home with you. At the end of the class, we will enjoy a bossam and kimchi pairing. Let's celebrate Kimjang and keep the Korean tradition of kimchi making alive. Curious to see how our last cooking class with Chef Judy went? See our Instagram post!
Please note that all ingredients for cooking will be provided by Chef Judy. For those who have dietary restrictions, we can work with Chef Judy to accommodate your needs as long as we are given an advance notice.

AKASF is proud to host our third Member Spotlight as part of an ongoing series!
Our Member Spotlights allow our community to share their adoption stories and journeys in whatever way they feel most comfortable. Since the format of these Member Spotlights is primarily driven by the guest speakers – the group space, size, and discussion format of these Member Spotlights will vary from speaker-to-speaker. The ultimate goal with our Member Spotlights, is to create a platform for those who wish to share their adoption story, while also allowing others to engage and deeply connect with those shared journeys.

INTRODUCING RYAN OVERTON
Ryan joined the AKASF Board in 2018 to help grow the community and help with and create events. Ryan’s passions are traveling, trying new whiskies and wine, collecting sneakers, sports, and spending time with family. He hopes to see AKASF continue to grow and evolve and be a resource for the Korean Adoptee community in the greater SF/Bay Area and beyond.

Squid Games Summer Picnic
ABOUT THE EVENT
Join us July 27th from 11am-4pm for the AKA-SF Squid Games (and our annual summer picnic). This family friendly event will be at Lindley Meadow in Golden Gate Park. PARKING & TRAFFIC
As we all know, parking in San Francisco can be chaotic at times. In the past we haven’t had any issues with finding parking near Lindley Meadow. Something else to be aware of though is SF will be hosting their yearly marathon. We expect the runners to have already passed by the start of our picnic, but know that there could be some impacts to traffic. Please be sure to review the Impact on San Francisco’s Neighborhoods and Suggested Detours before making your way to the park.

A Conversation with Nicole Chung
ABOUT THE EVENT
In June, The Association of Korean Adoptees (AKA-SF) is excited to host, “A Conversation with Nicole Chung .” In preparation for the event and in support of Nicole’s new book, A Living Remedy, AKA-SF will offer the first 10 registrants discounted books at $10/ea. (The first registrants will be contacted directly by AKA-SF with further instructions to receive their discounted books.)
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nicole Chung’s A Living Remedy was named a Notable Book of 2023 by The New York Times and a Best Book of the Year by over a dozen outlets, including Time, USA Today, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Electric Literature, and TODAY. Her 2018 debut, the national bestseller All You Can Ever Know, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, a semifinalist for the PEN Open Book Award, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, and an Indies Choice Honor Book.
Chung’s writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Time, The Guardian, GQ, Slate, Vulture, and many other publications. Previously, she was digital editorial director at the independent publisher Catapult, where she helped lead its magazine to two National Magazine Awards; before that, she was the managing editor of The Toast and an editor at Hyphen magazine. In 2021, she was named to the Good Morning America AAPI Inspiration List honoring those “making Asian American history right now.” Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, she now lives in the Washington, DC area.
