Our Community Code of Conduct
AKASF prides itself on welcoming and honoring the Korean adoptee community throughout the Bay Area and beyond. In that spirit, we ask that all community members attending any AKASF event, or participating in conversations with AKASF and its members via social media or any other forums abide by our Community Code of Conduct.
The Association of Korean Adoptees - SF (AKASF) wants to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants and community members. To that end, the AKASF Board has established the following requirements for program and event attendees during any event:
Venue/Personal Property – Event attendees must respect the event venue, guest speaker(s), and fellow participants property at all times. Each attendee will be held responsible for any and all damage they cause. If you or your child(ren) are responsible for any malicious damage to property, you and/or your child(ren) may also be expelled from the current and future gatherings hosted by AKASF.
Drugs/Alcohol – Event attendees must refrain from illegal drug use and over excessive alcohol consumption during the event. Underage attendees will refrain from alcohol consumption altogether. AKASF expects all attendees to consume alcohol and/or any other legalized substance responsibly. AKASF has the right to deny service or entry to attendees and may require attendees to leave an event based upon inappropriate consumption and subsequent behavior.
Attire – Unless otherwise stated, there is no dress code for our events/gatherings; however, offensive attire that alludes to or negatively comments on gender, gender identity or expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance or health, body size, race, religion, national origin, political affiliation, inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images will not be tolerated. Event attendees who fail to abide will be notified and given an opportunity to address their attire. Event attendees who do not comply will not be permitted to participate in the event.
Discrimination – AKASF requires all event attendees to respect each others’ race, nationality, gender, gender identity or expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, and all other personal characteristics, as well as refrain from any acts of discrimination.
Harassment - Unlawful harassment is defined as any unwelcome verbal, non-verbal, or physical conduct. All forms of harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form (e.g. in-person interactions, online, or via any other mode of connection/communication) will not be tolerated and could result in expulsion from our social media outlets, mailing lists, or the current event as well as future AKASF events.
Sexual Harassment and Violence – Sexual harassment is unacceptable conduct of a sexual nature which makes a person feel uncomfortable, offended, humiliated, and/or intimidated. Examples of conduct or behavior which constitute sexual harassment include, but are not limited to: physical conduct; physical violence, including sexual assault; unwelcome physical contact or inappropriate touching; the use of threats or rewards to solicit sexual favors; comments or insults based on appearance, age, private life, etc.; sexual comments, stories or jokes; sexual advances; repeated and unwanted social invitations for dates or physical intimacy; condescending or sexist remarks; sending sexually explicit messages (by phone or email); display of sexually explicit or suggestive material or images; sexually-suggestive gestures; whistling or “cat calling.” Sexual harassment, sexual assault, and stalking in any form will not be tolerated. Verbal and/or physical aggression/violence and threatening behavior will not be tolerated. This includes in-person or virtually.
Laws – All event attendees and social media members/followers must abide by the rules and laws of California and the greater United States of America.
Respect/Self-Care – All event attendees and social media members/followers must show basic respect for other attendees’/members’ opinions and refrain from disruptive behavior. AKASF asks that each individual respect the experiences of others, listen with the intent of learning, know that issues discussed may be triggering, and practice self-care when needed.
By attending an AKASF event or joining our online social media community, I hereby acknowledge that I have read and understood all of the above, and I agree that failure to abide by the Community Code of Conduct may result in expulsion from our social media outlets, mailing lists, or the current event as well as future AKASF events, and that I may be held legally and financially responsible for my actions. I agree to abide by any and all additional rules and regulations set forth by AKASF, the event host, the hosting venue, and any other event venues.
Reporting Unacceptable Conduct
If you or anyone else is in immediate danger at any time, please contact local law enforcement (by calling 911) and immediately notify an AKASF board member. Any received reports will be treated seriously and addressed promptly. Incidents will be handled with respect for the privacy of the victim, and will be confidential to the extent practical, given the circumstances. Reports may also be made anonymously at info@akasf.org.
Upon receiving a complaint the matter may be further investigated by additional AKASF board members. If a person has been found to have harassed another person, any of the following may take place:
Verbal or written warning;
Suspension from our social media outlets, mailing lists, or attendance at AKASF events;
Prohibit attendance at any future gatherings
The AKASF board member receiving the report will respect any and all requests of the victim to remain anonymous. Unacceptable conduct may be part of a larger pattern of repeated harassment. Please alert AKASF to all such conduct regardless of the offender’s identity or job title, even if you prefer your report to remain anonymous.
Media
AKASF Board members sometimes take photographs at our events, which may be used for promotional and educational purposes. Additionally, AKASF may work with videographers to film general sessions and performances, as well as ask attendees to give short testimonial interviews about their experiences with the organization. These videos may be used for promotional or education purposes. Registration and attendance at, or participation in AKASF events, constitutes agreement by the registrant to AKASF’s use and distribution of the registrant's image or voice in photographs, videotapes, websites, and electronic reproductions, of such events and activities unless the photographed or videoed individual explicitly asks for privacy. If you have questions about our policy our would like to request that your image be kept confidential, please send an email to: info@akasf.org.
